| All over
Baltimore, on the older architecture of the City, you can find examples
of stone work that is impressive. Here is a collection of what Kilduff's
has found, so far |

|
| Baltimore
City College : Above are the stone faces
of Buckler and Fenhagen . They are located on the entranceway of
Baltimore City College in Northeast Baltimore City. .Both
are located on the front of Baltimore City College, located at 33rd
and the Alameda. Not quite sure who the two bottom images are ? Anyone ? Below : The owl, the symbol of knowledge, being embraced by the gargoyle, on the front of Baltimore City College. The trim of the building has what appear to be squirrels eating nuts. |

|
..............................
|
| Not to be outdone, designers on
the west side of the City put plenty of stone details into the design
of the Western High School, on McCulloh Street, built in 1896. (
Just for the record, this building was built years before the City
College Building on 33rd Street ) |

.................................................................
|
| The 1700 block of Guilford
Avenue has several old stone faces to look at. Just two blocks
south of North Avenue, the old factory building has the above face
staring at you from the trim. What could best be described
as a Mayan Indian look, this stone face is also on the front
of the old factory in East Baltimore. |

|
.............
|
.............
|
..............
|
| ( Below left ) This stone face
is just above the loading dock on the building. It's not the
years that has made this face so scary looking, but it was likely
intended to keep unwelcome vistors out of the building. At the roof line ( Below right ), just above the date
stone of the building, is this wild face. |
.................
|
..............
|
| Located in West Baltimore
is this stone monk ( below left ) , at the right
side of the entrance of the old Frederick Douglass High School
on Calhoun Street. The monk appears to be writing while holding
a candle. On the left side of the
doorway at the old Douglas High School, a barefoot stone subject
appears deep in reading. Several other Baltimore City schools from
the era also have stone tablets, including Baltimore City College
on 33rd Street, and the old Western High School on Gywnns Falls Parkway.
Below those pictures, two stone characters I missed for many
years further up on the buildings facade. On the North corner, a figure
is looking into a book, while the figure on the southside of the building
is looking at a globe. |

|
| In East Baltimore, there
is an entire block of houses that have stone work down on the
entranceways. Each stone is different, and quite detailed. The
very first house in the block has this stone face. I can't
tell if he's laughing or in pain. The final house on
the block has this much relieved looking face. I tend to wonder
if the stones tell a story. |

|
| Just one block to the
west of the " Stone Faces row " in East Baltimore, there is another
odd sight at the entranceway to a apartment building at the corner
of Broadway. This colorful entranceway , complete with stained glass
as a door ornament that appears to have a western theme to it, a steer's
head with a "V" below it. Anyone happen to know the story about
this one ? |
.............
|
..............
|
| One of the patterns from
the middle of the block. End houses have always costs more,
as you get a bigger lot and side windows, but could the stones have
also been a selling point for these houses ? Another of the mid-block
stones. Several of the homes are vacant, and it appears one
stone has already been taken, or atleast is currently missing.
Sadly,
these homes aren't always well kept up. You can clearly see
the stone on this boarded up house in the block .

|
| A
keyhole doorway, minus the fancy corner stone, located in West Baltimore
City. This is the only one on West Baltimore I have been able
to locate, so far. I believe the doorway
in the red ( above ) was recently taken down. The East Baltimore neighborhood
that has an entire block with the keyhole entranceways.
Each doorway also has a " fancy stone", each with a different pattern
on it. |
| Not quite as
fancy, but interesting none the less, are the door ornaments you
can find all over the City, just above the doorway.

Just above the entranceway of a closed school at East North Avenue and Wolfe Street, East Baltimore City. |

....Odd looking face over a doorway of a rowhouse, I believe this one was also in West Baltimore. |

.....What appears to be a boy walking along, carrying a large bag. |

.........................Leaf design, West Baltimore City. |
| In order of appearance ( below )
, a lion head peeks out of the facade of a home on North Eutaw Street.
The bas relief next to that image can be found on a closed up industrial
building in East Baltimore near Chester Street. The stone bust below
that picture is on the same building, at the entranceway. I am happy
to report someone removed the bike tire that was around the stone since
this picture was taken. Finally, a stone Coca Cola bottle on the old distributing
plant on Kirk Avenue, in Northeast Baltimore. |

| Kilduff's first started out as a web
site devoted to Baltimore movie theatres, and below you can find
some of the stone work of the old Town Theatre in downtown Baltimore.
The building recently underwent renovation, but at this point, has
not reopened. Below that, two odd stone heads on the old Pabst Beer
packing plane on South Charles Street. Stone work on a row house on East
North Avenue, near Calvert Street can be seen below that and the doorstone
of the old Southwestern Police District house on Pratt Street at Calhoun,
with the buildings construction date of 1883 listed. |

| ( Below
) The Reese Monument, while it was kept at Lake Clifton High School
in Northeast Baltimore ( 2008 ) . It was recently returned to the old
Eastern High School, which is now owned by Johns Hopkins. ( Below
that ) , Stone work above the entranceway of the old Mercantile
Bank building on West Baltimore Street, which was later the headquarters
of the Carrollton Bank. The building is currently used as a church. (
Below right ) The wise old owl can be found high above street level
on the old Dunbar High School building on Caroline Street near Orleans Street.

| Above, The eagle that
had been on the Chesapeake Cadillac building for years was saved
and added to the facade of the supermarket that went up on the site.
Not quite as lucky, some of the stone work , on a smaller side building
, of the West Baltimore General Hospital on Rayner Street , which has
since been torn down. ..... |
