In Baltimore's Old Town section, the
Gay Street corridor was converted back in the early 1970's into a pedestrian
mall. It did well for years, but lately, the foot mall is empty of any
traffic, on foot or wheels. There were two movie theatres in this block
back when the street was open to vehicle traffic, the Crystal and the Dream.
Currently, both buildings are standing, but with all the vacant properties
in the area, I suspect changes are coming. The Dream opened around 1913,
and was only open as a theatre for a few years, and has been used for a
variety of uses over the past 90 years. Much of Gay Street has disappeared
over the years, with entire sections being built over.
